Gothic Architecture of Seville: St. Mary of the See Cathedral

Sevilla

The Cathedral of St. Mary of the See (Spanish: Catedral de Santa María de la Sede) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the center of Seville's Old Town, Spain.

Five interesting facts about the Seville Cathedral:

  • Its construction started in 1401, after the Christians reconquered Seville, and it ended in 1506. The cathedral occupies the site of the great Aljama mosque, built in the late 12th century; the main part of the Giralda Tower (105 m/ 343 ft high), the Gate of Forgiveness and the Courtyard of the Orange Trees are the only remaining parts of the mosque.
  • It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world; the total area occupied by the building is 23500 sq m (252952 sq ft).
  • It has 80 chapels.
  • In 1987, it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • It is the final resting place of the remains of Christopher Columbus (1451–1506).

  1. My most vivid memory of the Giralda was that it was the first place I was able to see the external structure of a cathedral from above ground level, as I looked out the windows while climbing the ramp up the tower. Wonderful photos. Thank you.
