Parks in Warsaw: Royal Lazienki

Łazienki Królewskie

The Royal Lazienki (Polish: Łazienki Królewskie) is a historic park with picturesque alleys, small ponds, beautiful palaces and creative sculptures located in the center of Warsaw, Poland.

Five interesting facts about the park:

  • With a total area of 76 ha (187 ac), it is the largest public park in Warsaw.
  • It was originally designed by the Dutch architect Tylman van Gameren  (1632–1706) as a bath park in the 17th century, in the Baroque style, for the great royal marshal Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski (1642–1702).
  • In 1764, it became the property of the last king of Poland Stanisław II Augustus (1732–1798), who filled, with the help of the best architects, including the Italian architect Domenico Merlini (1730–1797), this space with magnificent Classicistic buildings.
  • It is famous for concerts of Frédéric Chopin music, which take place from the middle of May to the end of September.
  • The Palace on the Isle is one of the most valuable Polish historical buildings, housing the Royal Picture Gallery.
