Roma

Rome (Italian: Roma) is the capital and largest city of Italy located in the Lazio region, between the Apennine mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, along the shores of the Tiber river.

  • According to legend, it was founded by the two brothers, and demi-gods, Romulus and Remus, in 753 BC.
  • Its historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.

  • In 2016, it was ranked the most visited city in Italy, the 3rd most visited in the European Union and the 14th most visited in the world.
  • Famous people born in Rome: Julius Caesar (Roman political leader; 100BC–44BC), Roberto Rossellini (film director; 1906–1977), Sophia Loren (actress; 1934), Eros Ramazzotti (musician; 1963).
