Varnikų botaninis zoologinis draustinis

The Varnikai Botanical-Zoological Reserve (Lithuanian: Varnikų botaninis zoologinis draustinis) is a reserve located in the southern part of Trakai Historical National Park, Lithuania. The reserve is used for educational recreation – a 3.45 km (2.144 mi) long path goes through naturally formed forests and hard-to-reach swamps.

Five interesting facts about the Varnikai reserve:

  • It spreads across an area of 657 hectares (1623 ac), the majority of which (450 ha /1111 ac) is covered with forests, while the remaining 207 hectares (511 ac) comprise the Ilgelis marsh.
  • It has 600 known types of higher flora of which 16 have been entered in the Lithuanian Red Book; 118 types of moss (four of them are protected), 204 species of lichen (four are protected) and 15 species of protected insects were found there.
  • Small and thin pine trees growing in the marsh are of the same age as those growing in the big forest. Slow growth of the marshland pines is predetermined by constant excess of humidity and lack of nutrition materials.
  • Berries and mushrooms are picked in the reserve – it is rich in cranberries, blueberries and wild strawberries.
  • The nature of the path is always changing and this makes this path unique.

  2. I remember walking around here on a summers day. Kept getting bitten by the bugs! But love the foresty areas and a great place to get away from the capital Vilnius.
