The Gibralfaro Castle: A Moorish Fortress in Malaga, Spain

The Gibralfaro Castle (Spanish: Castillo de Gibralfaro) is a Moorish fortress situated on the Gibralfaro hill at a height of 130 m (427 ft) in Malaga, southeast Spain.



Five interesting facts about the Gibralfaro Castle:


  • It was built in 929 AD by Abd-al-Rahman III (889/91–961), Caliph of Cordoba, on a former Phoenician enclosure and lighthouse.
  • It was enlarged by Yusef 1 (1318–1354), Sultan of Granada, at the beginning of the 14th century.
  • It was besieged by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand (1452–1516) and Isabella (1451–1504) in the summer of 1487.
  • It was used as a military base until 1925.
  • It has two lines of walls and eight towers.
