The Erect Prickly Pear (Opuntia dillenii) is a species of cactus in the Cactaceae family that has a natural range across the Americas and the Caribbean; it is naturalised in Europe (the Canary Islands, Malta), Africa, Australia and southern Asia.

  • It is a low-growing shrub up to 2 m (6.6 ft) in height.
  • In this plant, the leaves are modified into spines, whereas the stem is modified into flat, spongy, leaf-like structures, with the water-storage tissues inside them.
  • It has yellow flowers that are followed by juicy maroon-purple-coloured fruit.
  • In India, the underground roots are used for inducing quick vomiting in the case of persons bitten by poisonous snakes.
  • The fresh fruits are used as an antidiabetic agent in Canary Islands folk medicine.
