Poland

Sopot is a small seaside city and spa resort, located between Gdansk and Gdynia in Eastern Pomerania on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Poland.

Five interesting facts about Sopot:

  • The first written record of the city's name dates back to 1283.
  • In 1901, it was granted city rights by the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, Wilhelm II (1859–1941).
  • Its unique character stems from the Art Nouveau houses, surrounded by historic parks and beautifully cultivated gardens, with greenery covering 60% of the city area.
  • It has the longest wooden pier in Europe (511.5 m/ 1678 ft), stretching into the Baltic sea from the middle of the city beach.
  • It is famous for its Sopot International Song Festival, the largest such event in Europe after the Eurovision Song Contest.

  1. That picture of the Baltic Sea is beautifully mesmerizing. I have some ancestors long ago from Poland yet, I know nothing about the country. I would love the historic parks and the fact that 60% of the city is gardens and greenery. Oh, and the light house.
