Mandragora Jewish food restaurant, Lublin, Poland

Jewish food restaurant

Mandragora is a Jewish restaurant, located in the Old Town of Lublin, Poland. The restaurant offers a very colourful and intimate atmosphere full of warmth and aroma of klezmer music together with the smell of Jewish dishes. Many of the ingredients and served wines are specially imported from Israel and are certified as kosher.

A rustic, old-timey feel with lots of touches of the symbols of Judaism: gorgeous antique menorahs, hand-painted drawings, elaborate candle sticks and crocheted table cloths.

The restaurant serves as an unlikely echo of prewar Lublin, known before the Holocaust as “the Jerusalem of Poland” because of its 40,000 Jewish residents.
From the Middle Ages, Jews made up a significant part of the community of the city of Lublin where they established the Talmudic Academy and a Hebrew printing house in the 16th century. It was also an important centre of Hasidic Judaism – a mystical branch of Judaism.

  4. I have not much knowledge about Jewish food until I went to Poland and visited the Jewish Quarter. Hanukkah tea, especially the tea cup looks like the apple tea from Turkey. Not sure about the taste is the same. I would love to taste it one day.

  10. I imagine people from far off places come to visit Mandragora. This restaurant is beautiful and all the added touches of olden times Judaism has to bring about a spirit of camaraderie among them and even not Jewish visitors.
