The Basilica of St. Mary of Health

The Basilica of St. Mary of Health (Italian: Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute) is a Roman Catholic church, located in Venice, Italy.



Five interesting facts about Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute:

  • It was build in Baroque style in 1631–1687 to a design by the Italian architect Baldassare Longhena (1598–1682).
  • It was dedicated to Our Lady of Health, and built to commemorate the end of a terrible outbreak of the plague that began in 1630, and killed nearly a third of Venice's 150,000 citizens.
  • It stands on a platform made of 1,156,627 wooden pilings.
  • It is constructed of Istrian stone and marmorino (brick covered with marble dust).
  • The interior is octagonal with small chapels on each side of the building, and full of Marian symbolism.
