The Budapest Zoological Garden (Hungarian: Budapest állatkert) is a 18.4-ha (45.46 ac) zoo, located in Budapest, Hungary.



Five interesting facts about Budapest állatkert:


  • Opened to the general public in 1866 as a private institution, it is one of the oldest zoological gardens in the world.
  • In 1907, it was auctioned and taken over by the capital city, Budapest, and, after a complete reconstruction, reopened in 1912.
  • It is home to over 10,500 animals representing nearly 1,100 different species.
  • It is an accredited member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
  • It has 1–1.1 million visitors every year.
