Metelkova Alternative Culture Centre, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Metelkova City (Slovenian: Metelkova mesto) is an alternative culture centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, located on the site of the former Austro-Hungarian army barracks, build in the late 19th century.

Five interesting facts about Metelkova:

  • The site, consisting of seven buildings, was squatted in 1993 by a group of about 200 activists, artists and intellectuals.
  • It is autonomous and liberal, but not anarchistic and lawless.
  • Most of the buildings have been covered in graffiti, folk art, found tile mosaics, weird sculptures, and punk rock statements of purpose.
  • In 2006, the municipality declared Metelkova a national cultural heritage site, which has so far prevented further demolition.
  • Every year the site hosts more than 1,500 alternative events in its buildings.
