Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria island, the co-capital (jointly with Santa Cruz) of the Canary Islands, and the ninth largest city in Spain.

  • It is the ninth largest city in Spain.
  • It is located in the northeastern part of the island, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • It was founded in 1478 by Juan Rej√≥n (?–1481), an Aragonese captain in the service of the Castilian navy.
  • In 1492, Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) anchored in the port of Las Palmas and spent some time on the island on his first trip to the Americas.
  • Vegueta, the oldest quarter of the city, was entered on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1990.
