Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria island and the co-capital (jointly with Santa Cruz) of the Canary Islands, Spain.
Five interesting facts about Las Palmas:
It is the ninth largest city in Spain.
It is located in the northeastern part of the island, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic Ocean.
It was founded in 1478 by Juan Rejón (?–1481), an Aragonese captain in the service of the Castilian navy.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) anchored in the port of Las Palmas and spent some time on the island on his first trip to the Americas.
Vegueta, the oldest quarter of the city, was entered on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1990.
