The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a species of butterfly in the Nymphalidae family that is widely distributed across temperate regions of North Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

  • It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 10th edition of Systema Naturae (1758).
  • The characteristic coloration of the butterly is a black hindwing with a red-orange marginal band; the dorsal forewing is also black with white markings near the apex.
  • It has a wingspan of about 5 cm (2 in).
  • Each autumn, they migrate throughout northern Europe, flying south, to reach areas with conditions suitable for surviving the winter.
  • It is completely harmless to humans.
