European mantis

The European mantis or Praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) is an insect in the family of Mantidae, native to Southern Europe, Asia and northern Africa.



Five interesting facts about Mantis religiosa:

  • It is the only insect able to turn its head 180 degrees side-to-side.
  • The insect was introduced to the eastern US in 1899.
  • Females are known to eat the males after mating.
  • French folklore suggests a praying mantis can point a lost child back to her home.
  • Although a carnivore and an impressive predator, this mantis is completely harmless to humans.
